Sithonia: A Family Adventure on the Second Peninsula of Halkidiki

We set off for Sithonia, the second and most scenic leg of Greece’s Halkidiki peninsula. The journey is beautiful, though the winding roads prove a bit much for Diede, who luckily drifts off to sleep. Upon arrival, we check into a large family-friendly campsite. We’re free to walk around and choose our own spot. While the beachfront pitches are already taken, we’re happy to find a shaded area among the trees—especially welcome given the hot weather forecasted for the coming days.

Relaxed Camping With Kids in Sithonia

We find two spots next to each other, perfect for camping as a group. The setting is fantastic, and we’re surrounded by other Dutch families with children. Our girls quickly make friends and spend their mornings playing together before we all head to the beach. With our inflatable paddleboard (SUP) pumped up, we hit the water for some serious paddling fun—even grandpa gives it a try. What a daring guy!

One of the Dutch children at the campsite celebrates a birthday, so we join for a coffee. Jinte crafts a handmade gift, and we wrap up a clown nose as a present. Since our girls follow a gluten-free diet, we had prepared them for the possibility of missing out on cake. But to our astonishment, the birthday boy’s considerate dad visited three bakeries to find gluten-free treats just for them—such a touching gesture!

Changing Plans and Soaking Up the Simple Joys

We originally planned to move on to another location, but everything feels right here. The atmosphere is peaceful, we’ve got a great spot, and to top it off, we get the fourth night free. Our days are full of joy—quality time with the children followed by cozy evenings of board games once they’re in bed. Rinus becomes a big fan of UNO. Initially frustrated by losing, he insists on playing until he wins. His determination pays off, especially once we realize Mirre isn’t entirely clear on the game rules.

Farewells and Heartwarming Memories

We enjoy dinner at the local Greek campsite restaurant, have a barbecue one night, and on our final evening, grandma makes her signature pancakes. When departure day arrives, all the Dutch families leave at the same time. We drive together through the charming town of Nea Moudania, heading back toward Thessaloniki. After a shared lunch, we stop by a beautiful church, only to find it closed. On our way back, we encounter a stray dog followed by its pack. Thankfully, we’re prepared and keep the kids safe in the bicycle trailer while handling the situation calmly.

One Last Night Before Saying Goodbye

Our last night is spent at a motorhome parking spot where the weather turns cool and damp. We end up dining inside again, just like on our first night. But there’s a silver lining—an adorable little donkey and a pony that Diede would have loved to ride.

The next morning is filled with mixed emotions. Goodbyes never get easier. Luckily, we savor one final sunny breakfast together before heading in separate directions. We drop grandpa and grandma off at the camper dealership as they prepare to spend a few more days exploring Thessaloniki. We, on the other hand, are off to our next destination: Turkey.

With tight hugs, a few tears, and hearts full of beautiful memories, we say our farewells. Until October, dear Opi and Omi—thank you for the unforgettable family time.
