From Elafonisos to Gythio: Family Road Trip Through Greece’s Hidden Gems
After leaving the beautiful island of Elafonisos, we headed towards a campsite just past Gythio. Time for a proper shower, clean laundry, and a bit of comfort. We parked right across from the playground—perfect for the kids! We had a sweet little German neighbor named Mara, who crawled over to us every time we were at the playground. Nearby, we met a German woman originally from the Netherlands who shared plenty of great travel tips. She and her family have been wintering in Greece for years.
The next day, we explored the center of Gythio—a charming seaside town in the Peloponnese. A fun playground, a scenic walk along the water, and a lovely meal at a local taverna made it a perfect day. The kids were happy, and so were we.
As we drove further south, we found a peaceful spot nestled among the trees with a small beach nearby. In low season, wild camping here is no problem—no one seems to mind. We’re curious to see how things will change once the official camping season begins.
Goos (our dog) ended up with ticks within minutes of being outside, so the girls were sent out with long pants and high socks. After a bit of stone tossing on the beach and a full-body tick check for everyone, we wrapped up the day with sandwiches after a warm lunch.
The next day, we stumbled upon the clearest blue water we’ve seen so far on this trip. It was breathtaking. Some of the smooth stones looked like pastel Easter eggs. Goos even took a refreshing dive—what a dog’s life!
That evening, we parked near a small cemetery. The view was stunning, but Mirre felt uneasy. She checked it out and came back convinced that some of the graves had been robbed. When Johan went to see for himself, it turned out they were simply under renovation—tools and materials everywhere. A spooky case of tunnel vision!
All in all, they were relaxing days, and we even managed to get a lot of work done—always a win when you’re traveling and remote working as a family.
