We make a stop at the most famous castle in Finland, Olavinlinna. Fun fact, Johan dreams of one day having his own castle. Mirre, on the other hand, is horrified by the spooky corridors and the idea of a dungeon. Jinte also likes it and together they fantasize about their own castle while we walk around in the meantime. She learns about knights, moats and cannons. Unfortunately, part of it is closed because it is being converted into an opera, but that is why we did not have to pay entrance. We play hide and seek in the park next door and then head to our sleeping place.
Tonight we are standing off grid along a beautiful lake (Finland is known for it for a reason) and right next to the largest wooden church in the world. We have a snack and throw a lot of stones. Video calling with the family at home is always fun! At first we were afraid that Jinte would have a hard time with it, but she doesn’t like it and really enjoys it. She talks about Brielle, family and school in a very light-hearted way.
We eat our broccoli outside on a bench by the lake. We watch a boat launch and ask the owners what the sound is that we have been hearing for a number of days. It looks like a kind of horn being blown, a heavy sound. It turns out to be a baby bird. We didn’t expect that! We still have to discover which bird exactly. Jacqueline, ask Gerard!
The next morning, Mirre and Diede sleep in. Johan and Jinte are going with Goos. After breakfast we walk around the church. So nice that many large buildings here are painted in such a cheerful color. Unfortunately it is still closed, we already thought so. There are only services in the summer, in the winter it is impossible to get warm. It is also impressive from the outside and we can peek inside in a few places. We get some groceries and head to the campsite. The weather will be even nicer than it already is in the coming days, wonderful!
